(Mt) – New England College Obesity in Workplace & Social Media Discussion

Choose one or more topics from Exhibit 5.3 in our text and discuss their current status and the ethical issues surrounding them now. While you can select the same category as a classmate, be sure not to use the same issue or company. Be sure to include at least two recent events that have happened either locally or nationally.I choose Obesity topic from Exhibit 5.3 in our textbook Over the years, organizations have struggled continuously to control their employees health care costs and the associated chronic diseases that their workforce is prone to because of unhealthy lifestyles that they lead. The technique of reducing healthcare costs by providing necessary insurance facilities and the availability of a good network of hospitals for good medical care of employees hasn t produced excellent results in the past. Now, many organizations are gradually shifting their focus at the root cause of the problem and promoting a healthy lifestyle among their employees. This is being achieved by incorporating employer-sponsored wellness and weight management programs (DeBeaumont, 2009). The main problem with obesity as a disease is that not everyone may be aware that there is an obesity epidemic worldwide. People do not realize that obesity is often the root cause of prevailing chronic lifestyle diseases such as heart attack, heart failure, high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, cancer, and even psychological problems such as depression and anxiety. Employers can play a massive role in encouraging healthy employee lifestyles and raise awareness about obesity and its effects and preventive measures that can be taken by organizing awareness programs and inviting fitness and healthcare experts to conduct talks and workshops on creating healthy lifestyle habits. Many employees complain that their jobs require them to sit and work for long hours, leading to obesity. People with job profiles such as analysts, consultants, researchers, coders, developers, testers, etc. spend as long as up to 14-16 hours per day sitting and working in front of their laptops and desktops and are, therefore, exposed to chronic diseases and increased mortality rates. Newer organizations have innovated the desk and workspaces by incorporating standing desks and treadmill desks to stand or move around (Bateman et al., 2019). In addition to low physical movement, another root cause of obesity is the diet of the employee. Organizations are often accused of providing unhealthy food alternatives to their workforce, such as frequently serving sweetened beverages like coffee, tea, having vending machines in workplaces that serve soft drinks, soda, and a kitchen or cafeteria that prepares oily, unhealthy food for its employees. All of these food options gradually lead to obesity in their daily consumption. Instead, employers can replace these with healthy alternatives such as green tea, salads, healthy juices, whole grain bread, oatmeals, etc. Stress in the workplace is also a vital source of the poor health of the employees. Having low organizational culture, vertical organizational hierarchy, autocratic bosses, undistributed workload, strict targets, etc. can lead to a lack of sleep, stress eating, obesity, and imbalance of metabolism among the employees. Therefore, to remove stress as a barrier to a healthy lifestyle, its top executives should promote a healthy and positive work environment. Human resource managers should conduct stress-management training programs for the employees and lead a healthy, stress-free lifestyle. Organizations can also conduct outdoor training sessions, fitness, and exercise classes to improve the employee s physical activity (Levine & Schweitzer, 2015). POST 2: Social Media In our society, social media became a part of our life. We are giving more importance to social media applications than any other. We established a special relationship with social media in our daily life. Isn t it interesting why we are giving so much importance to nonliving being than a living being? Information released through social media will have a broad impact on us and reach the public much quicker. Facebook, WhatsApp, Tik TOK, Instagram, etc. are the best examples of social media. The 2018 survey demonstrates that most of the crimes happen by using social networks either directly or indirectly. It is the responsibility of social networking applications to prevent the user s confidentiality. Prevention is better than cure is always right. Hacking a social media profile is not an ethic. Ethical hacking is exceptional with special permission. The following are the most common ethical challenges by social media, which affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Information sharing:- Should not share our personal or professional information completely in our online profiles, which are publicly visible to everyone. Effect relationships:- Many people are getting predicted to use social media. Most of them could not spend enough time building a connection in their lives with the surrounding society. But they are involved in smart apps to communicate and doing any other activity. During this COVID-19, many of us are using only social media to communicate or share information. Many surveys prooved that youngsters are the majority one s that are using this social media frequently. Most hackers use social engineering techniques to hack the system information or personal data, even using social media. Many cybercrimes happened because of social media. Reference: Akram, W.
