Race and Ethnicity: U.S. and Global

Bias an unfair dislike towards someone
*Dislikes harden into opinions (bias >>>>>prejudice)
Prejudice preconceived opinion not based on reason or actual experience
*That opinion now influences people we never met (prejudice >>>>>> stereotypes)
Stereotypes allowing prejudice to judge an entire group of people
Discrimination ill-treatment based on either a bias, prejudice or a stereotype
*All of the above influence how we deal with people
*We are now moving from thought to action
Racism all of the above is rooted in the superiority of one race over another
Racism is about subjugation; is about power dynamics
Its hard for oppressed groups to be racist because they dont have the power to act out discrimination; they can have biases, prejudices, and stereotypes
It is a group dynamic
Ethnocentrism expands beyond race to include ethnicity and culture
My reaction:
Poor socioeconomic status leads to poor health outcomes. If there is a consorted effort to keep one group of people at a low socioeconomic status then by definition that group is going to have poor health outcomes. Almost every group of color has experienced low socioeconomic status compared to white people. The easiest example of a group like this is African Americans.
I believe you must be willing to be humble and sensitive to other peoples feelings and their experiences. We tend to normalize our personal experience to the whole. We then begin to judge other peoples experiences with regard to our own challenges. Being politically correct is about respecting the fact that we have different experiences and being kind when speaking to others. Its about cultural sensitivity. Healthcare is about caring for people who happen to be in a set of different circumstances than yourself. You are dealing with someone who is dealing with a different set of circumstances than yourself. You are trying to make their situation better. It is really, really important for us to realize that the identities that we hold have meaning to other people. And if we are going to help them then we have to be respectful. We have to be respectful of their experience and try to get ourselves out of the spectrum (Bias-Prejudice-Stereotypes-Discrimination-Racism-Ethnocentrism spectrum) and we have to be deliberate and intentional with the work we do. Because we are all somewhere on the spectrum.
