This is a strong first draft. Clearly, you re trying to control a lot of ideas and move us through a lot of information very quickly, which is the purpose of the summary. It would help to have strong topic and concluding sentences for your paragraphs. It would also help to use transitions in the middle. Please review my detailed comments, rework your draft and resubmit for full credit.

Reading Response Journal: Hope
This assignment has a few purposes. One, it s a writing assignment, for a class about writing, so that should be rather obvious. Two, this assignment asks you to begin working with the ideas that Duckworth discusses in her book chapter, Hope. (uploaded on the Upload files) Finally, doing this assignment is a second step towards that big scary paper assignment we discussed at the beginning of this weekly module. Like the discussion post you completed earlier, the ideas you come up with for this assignment, I want you to recycle in your larger paper. Some students will even borrow directly from their work, which is fine for this first paper.
So, here s what I would like you to do. Compose a 250-300 word (1-1.5 page) summary of the book chapter Hope by Angela Duckworth. What is a summary? Think of it as a review of what Angela Duckworth has to say in the book chapter where you put Duckworth s ideas into your own words. Summary requires the art of synthesis where you bring together the most important ideas from the book chapter and make them clear for your reader. Fair warning, a summary does not include your opinion. Leave it out!
Even though this is a short writing assignment, it helps to first begin with mapping out the most important ideas in the chapter; I suggest making a list of the ideas and then ranking their importance. Start with Duckworth s main idea, or her thesis, and then identify the important supporting evidence.
