The American Framers feared parties and designed the Constitution to defeat the mischiefs of faction. Generations of reformers have passed laws aimed at hobbling parties, and still today citizens regularly express dislike of parties in opinion polls. Yet parties thrive.
Write an essay in which you explain why, despite widespread dislike, parties in the United States remain strong and important. You should consider both recent and historical evidence for their continuing strength, along with the viewpoints of both organized interests and voters.
The question does not ask for a normative argument about whether American parties are good or bad for democracy, but an evidence-based explanation of why they remain strong despite much dislike. You may wish to offer a normative analysis, but the main part of your essay should be an evidence-based explanation.
Grading of essays will be based in significant part on the degree to which the essays have a strong and clear organization, as discussed in lecture on February 3. The point system for grading is as follows:
-Good title (0-2 points)
-Introductory paragraph (0-3 points in prospect)
How well opening paragraph summarizes and previews the essay
-Topic sentences on longer paragraphs that advance the argument that was presented in opening paragraph & preview what comes later in the paragraph (1 pt. each)
-Closing sentence on longer paragraphs that links back to introduction (1 pt)
-Building block pieces of evidence that advance your argument (1-3 points, depending on nuance, relevance, detail)
-Evidence-supported theoretical observation or summary (1-2 points)
-A rousing conclusion that follows from the analysis in the paper (3 points)
Introductory paragraph (0-3 points, in retrospect). How well in retrospect it organizes the essay.)
-How effectively the essay addressed the prompt (0-10 points)
