(1) Patrol, Patrol officers patrol
the streets, answer calls for service, make arrests, and deal with public
problems (domestic disputes/surveillance) and crimes. As a result of
patrolling, they also prevent crime (Peak et al, 2010, pg.316)
(2) Criminal investigation,
Detectives are involved in the investigation of crimes (breaking into
homes/businesses/vehicles). They solve cases, arrest perpetrators, and recover
stolen property (Peak et al, 2010, pg. 316).
. (3) Traffic enforcement, traffic
enforcement is responsible for ensuring that citizens abide by traffic laws
(speeding, running traffic lights and stop signs), and they also investigate
traffic crashes. (Peak et al, 2010, pg. 316).
How does a supervisor or manager manage each of
the three main types of units in a large police department, and what is the
manager s primary function/responsibility in each?

One of the primary responsibilities of a supervisor is to back officers on
calls, especially priority one calls. In doing so, the supervisor performs
several functions. First, safety is enhanced, especially if a situation gets
out of hand (pg. 319). The Sergeant is there for the officer s benefit (good/bad),
steering the officer away from turmoil, making sure no rules are or have be
broken. The sergeant is an extension of the handbook, the verbal version. The
supervisor does just that, Supervise, making sure the officer is doing their
job at the scene.
